Retro Bowl hands you the offence and simulates the defence. That makes defensive ratings one of the few places where money genuinely buys results: there is no skill ceiling to compensate for a thin unit, so a weak defence simply concedes.

In practice this means resisting the urge to spend every credit on offence. A modest defensive upgrade converts close games into wins more reliably than a marginally better receiver, because it turns opposition drives into punts you never had to earn.

Since you cannot make a stop yourself, the way you influence the other team is by not giving them time. A long, patient drive that ends in points is a double score: you go ahead and you delete a possession from their side of the game.

This is why the run game matters even in a passing-first design. Runs keep the clock moving; incompletions stop it. Late in a game you are protecting, every completed short run is worth more than a risky deep shot.

Field goals and extra points use a moving meter, and the failure mode is almost always rushing the second input. Set the power you actually need for the distance rather than the maximum available, then take the accuracy stop deliberately.

From long range the temptation is to max the power bar, which shrinks the accuracy window. If the kick is beyond comfortable range, the better decision is usually to keep the offence on the field and go for it.

Returns are short but they set your starting field position, and field position decides how conservative your play-calling has to be. Taking the return and finding one seam regularly saves a full first down of work on the drive that follows.
