The pro game gives you a draft and a salary cap; the college game gives you recruiting, the transfer portal and a roster that graduates. Here is how they actually differ.
The passing game is the same. Everything around it is not
Both games share the drag-and-release throw, the same run controls and the same pixel presentation. If you can play one you can play the other within a minute. The difference is the job you are given between matches.
Retro Bowl casts you as a general manager of a professional franchise: draft picks, a salary cap, free agency and contracts. Retro Bowl College, released by New Star Games on 18 September 2023, replaces all of that with recruiting, the transfer portal and program prestige.
Roster churn is the real difference
In the pro game a good player can anchor your team for years. In college he graduates. That single rule changes how you build: you are always recruiting a replacement for someone, and a team that peaks perfectly this season will be gutted by next.
The transfer portal adds a second kind of churn. Good players leave programs that lose, which means a bad season costs you twice — once on the scoreboard and again when the portal opens.
Prestige replaces the salary cap as your main constraint
There is no cap to juggle in college. Instead your program has prestige, and prestige decides which recruits will even listen to your pitch. Winning raises it, losing decays it, so the early seasons at a weak program are a grind where you are asked to win with players nobody else wanted.
That grind is the appeal for some players and the reason others bounce off. If you enjoy the arc of dragging a nobody school into contention, college is the better game. If you would rather optimise a roster with money, the pro game is.
Which one to start with
Start with the original. Its systems are explained more gently and the passing skill you build transfers completely. Move to College once throwing feels automatic and you want a harder management puzzle.
